I Am Barbie Girl

Mattel's Barbie doll is turning 55 this year and she is showing no signs of going into early retirement. I must say she is one amazing doll. For me she is the definition of what women can be in this world. A girl with a great sense of fashion, who has it all who does not sacrifice the one for the other.

Here are few things you might not have know about Barbie. Her official name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. She is grew up in Wisconsin, but lives in her newly renovated house in Malibu. She has a lovely on and of again boyfriend named Ken Carson. She has the most wonderful careers from astronaut to presidential candidate and even has a pilot license to fly commercial airplane.

I have always enjoyed playing with Barbie dolls when I was a kid, but ever since discovering that barbie not only had toy Barbie dolls (toy line) but also collectable barbie dolls (barbie collector line), I have become a avid Barbie fan. While playing with Barbie dolls is fun, collecting barbie dolls is serious business. With barbie dolls being designed by fashion designers Bob Mackie, Byron Lars, Vera Wang and others, collecting Barbie dolls is being taken to a whole new level.

Here are the basics of Barbie doll collecting: Barbie 101

Barbie produces an average of 60 to 80 collectable Barbie dolls a year with the retail prices usually ranging from $19,95 to $250,00 depending on the total number produced for sale worldwide, which varies from an undisclosed mass production amount to 1,000 worldwide. 'Vintage Barbie' are all Barbie dolls produced before 1972 and 'Modern Barbie' are all Barbie dolls produced beginning in 1972.

As far any hobby goes it can become as expensive as you want it to, however collecting barbie is an investment where profit is not always guaranteed and there lies the  biggest dilemma. While collectable Barbie dolls rarely decrease in value, there is no certain way of predicting which barbie will become more valuable in the future. So for a collector looking to making big bucks it is definitely not the collecting game to be in. That is one of the reasons you will find that people who collect Barbie are more than just collectors but also true Barbie lovers.

This year marks my 15th anniversary collecting Barbie dolls and currently I have 22 Barbie dolls in my collection. I have had such a good experience collecting that I do not think I will ever stop collecting.

Check out this video of a Barbie collector that has Barbie dolls 9,000 doll in his home. Talk about hard core collector.
